Tuomas Katajala /Tenor

Tuomas Katajala possesses a strong lyric tenor voice, which adapts easily across a wide spectrum of repertoire.

He was educated at the Conservatory of Oulu, the Sibelius Academy of Kuopio, and the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki. His teachers included Peter Lindroos and Esko Jurvelin. He has taken part in Master Classes with Stephen Kramer, Sergio La Stella, Harry van der Kamp and Seppo Ruohonen.

In Spring of 2004 Tuomas Katajala made his UK début at the Royal Albert Hall singing the Verdi Requiem with Sir David Willcocks. He has also sung at International Organ Week of Lahti, Festival of Organ Night and Aria in Espoo, the Royal Music Festival in Stockholm, Sweden, and with St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed as tenor soloist in, among other pieces, the Bach St Matthew and St John Passions, Christmas Oratorio, B-minor Mass, Magnificat and several Cantatas, Beethoven Ninth Symphony, Händel Messiah, Saint-Saens Christmas Oratorio, Rachmaninov Solemn Vespers, Schubert Mass in G Major, César Franck Mass in A Major, Sibelius Rakastava-sarja, Madetoja Väinämöisen kylvö, Rautavaara Auringontalo – an opera, in concert performance.

He has performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras in Helsinki, Oulu and Mikkeli, and given Lieder recitals and concerts in Finland, Sweden, Eesti and Italy. Conductors with whom he has performed with include Mikko Franck, Mats Liljefors, Jean Thorel, Arvo Volmer, Ari Angervo and Tibor Bogànyi.

Competition successes include First Prize in the international tenor competition in Jyväskylä in 2002, First Prize in the International Sacred Music Vocal Competition in Rome in 2003, commendation in Timo Mustakallio singing competition in Finland in 2002, and he was selected finalist in the First G Martinelli/A Pertile Competition in Montagnana, Italy in 2003 and second prize in the Gösta Winbergh Award i Sweden 2004.

Among upcoming engagements to be mentioned are Tamino at the Savonlinna Festival and the tenor part in “Short Cuts” with Instant Pluriel on tour in France and Luxemburg.
