Susanna Stern /Soprano

The young Swedish coloratura soprano Susanna Stern (b. 1982) has in a short while won recognition for her vocal and theatrical skills and is considered as one of the most promising young singers on the Swedish opera-scene.

Susanna grew up in a musical environment and cultivated her interest in opera from an early age. After a comprehensive musical education in her home town and later at the Örebro College of Music, she was accepted to the University College of Opera in Stockholm in 2006, graduating in 2009.

During her education, Susanna has performed roles such in Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto, Le nozze di Figaro (Susanna), Così fan tutte (Despina) and in spring 2008 she made her début as Ännchen in Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz atFolkoperan in Stockholm, followed by Flaminia in Haydn’s Il mondo della luna at the Drottningholm Court Theatre.

In the same year (2008) Susanna was awarded the Jenny Lind Prize, and was given the opportunity to perform extensively in the US and Sweden as part of the prize. Susanna has also been awarded several prizes, scholarships and awards from the Swedish Royal Academy of Music, The Friends Of Drottningholmsteatern and The Anders Sandrew Foundation.

In 2010 Susanna made her Malmö Opera début, in the role of Soeur Constance in Poulenc’s Dialogue des Carmelites and later, in the same season, she sang Zerlina in Don Giovanni at the Drottningholm Court Theatre. In spring 2011 she will add two significant roles to her growing repertoire -  Amor in Gluck’s Orphée followed by Norina in Don Pasquale, both at the Stockholm Royal Opera.

Susanna’s extensive oratorio repertoire includes a.o. Haydn’s The Creation, Mozart’s Trinitatis Mass, Mass in C-minor, Requiem and Coronation Mass, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Händel’s Messiah.

Susanna receives vocal instruction from Lena Hellström-Färnlöf, and has taken part in master classes with Craig Ruthenberg (Metropolitan Opera), Nick Carthy, Anna Sims, Noelle Barker, Birgitta Svendén, Matti Hirvonen, Monica Groop and  Gustaf Djupsjöbacka.
