Since his debut as Papageno at the Drottningholm Court Theatre, Jakob Högström is established as one of the most interesting and sought after lyrical baritones in Sweden. His exciting accuracy on stage and with delivery of text, repeatedly leads Jakob’s characters to establish a deep connection with audiences. He studied at Kulturama Stockholm, the Royal Academy of Music in London and the University College of Opera in Stockholm.
The successful debut as Papageno was followed by Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro with Arnold Östman at Malmö Opera, Marchese in Cimarosa’s Il marito disperato for Fäviken Opera and Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in a production conducted by Mark Tatlow. Jakob has also been praised for his creation of roles in recent world premières of modern operas, Baines in B Tommy Andersson’s William for the Vadstena Academy and Herr Snipa in Jonas Forsell’s Träskoprinsessan at Malmö Opera.
Jakob sang Testo in Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda with the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble and also with Arnold Östman at Confidencen (both in Stockholm). He also sang Fallito in Gassmann’s L’Opera Seria with Fäviken Opera and at a guest performance at Drottningholm. Jakob sang Baron Zeta in Lehár’s The Merry Widow at Folkoperan in Stockholm. He was also the baritone soloist in Lars-Erik Larsson’s Förklädd Gud with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Thomas Søndergaard in a production by Swedish Television to commemorate the centenary of the composer’s birth. Also Jakob sang Narbanor in Rameau’s Zoroastre for Opéra Comique in Paris with Les Talens Lyriques and Christophe Rousset. The same season he sang Dandini in a new production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola at Malmö Opera with conductor Brad Cohen. That engagement followed Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex at the same opera house and another production of the Magic Flute at Confidencen, where Jakob’s Papageno won over the audience with his dramatic talent. Recently Jakob was back at Malmö Opera, performing Barden I Stenhammar’s Tirfing.
Jakob is also a sought after concert and radio broadcast soloist and is often engaged for the bass parts in sacred repertoire, as Bach’s B minor Mass in Berwaldhallen with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in Västerås Concert Hall as well as several cantatas by Bach and his St John and St Matthew passions. He has collaborated with conductors such as Arnold Östman, Andrew Manze, Mark Soustrot, Staffan Larson, Stefan Parkman and Mark Tatlow.
