Since graduating from the Royal University College of Music in Stockholm, Swedish tenor Johan Christensson has established himself as one of the leading lyric tenors in the field of baroque- and contemporary music. He is often engaged as Evangelist in the baroque Passions and has developed into an opera artist with great charisma and temperament. In the past seasons he has performed haute-contre roles in French baroque operas and has been repeatedly invited to participate in world premiers of contemporary operas, both in Sweden and abroad.
Johan Christensson enjoys working with contemporary composers such as Jan Sandström and Carl Unander-Scharin and received exceptional praise for his interpretation of King Gustaf III in Sandström’s opera God Natt, Madame with the Piteå Chamber Opera. With the same company he also performed the Electrician in Thomas Adès’ Powder her face. His opera repertoire include parts such as: The title role in Lully’s Phaëton, Belmonte in The abduction from the Seraglio, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Iro in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria as well as Nutrice and Fortuna in L’incoronazione di Poppea. Important international opera engagements include Kurt in the World premiere of Philippe Fenelon’s opera Faust and Mercure and Suivant de l’amour in Rameau’s Hippolite et Aricie at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse. This summer Johan will perform the role of the schoolmaster in Stravinsky’s opera The Cunning Little Vixen at Läckö Castle Opera, directed by Linda Mallik and conducted by Simon Phipps.
Johan is regularly hired as a concert singer. Vital performances include Mozart’s C-minor mass in The Stockholm Concert Hall conducted by Alan Gilbert and Bach’s B-minor mass with Eric Ericson in Gothenburg and Norrköping, and in Stockholm under Stefan Parkman. He was invited to the Nidaros Cathedral as Evangelist in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with Robert King. Johan worked with conductors such as Andrew Manze, Roy Goodman, Tõnu Kaljuste, Eric Ericson, Robert King, Alan Gilbert, Gustav Sjöquist, Philip Pickett, Paul Goodwin, Emmanuelle Haïm, Georg Petrou, Bernard Kontarsky and Helmut Rilling.
