    Jonas Durán /Tenor

Jonas Durán was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, but grew up in Sweden. He received his musical education at the Ingesund Music School, the University College of Opera in Gothenburg and the RCM Benjamin Britten International Opera School where he studied with a.o. Madame Vera Rozsa. He has participated in master classes with Donald Maxwell, Philip Langridge, Sir Donald McIntyre, Gerald Finley, Sarah Walker and Eric Tappy.

In spring 2000, Jonas Durán made his operatic debut in the title role of La Clemenza di Tito for Gothenburg Opera School. Other roles include Janne in the world premiere of S@una Subtil by Fredrik Österling, Snout in A Midsummer Nights Dream (director John Copley), Beppe in I Pagliacci, Rinuccio in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Lensky from Eugene Onegin at Clonter Opera, Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte and Alfred in Die Fledermaus.

On the concert, oratorio and recital platform, Jonas has performed in Germany, Spain, Italy and Sweden. In 2001 he participated in a tenor concert at the 90th Anniversary of the birth of Jussi Björling at the Gothenburg Concert Hall. His repertoire also includes works like Mozart Requiem and Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle.

Jonas Durán has participated in many competitions and won first prize in the Jyväskylä International Singing Competition for Tenors in Finland in 2002. He was also a finalist in Madeleine Finden Singing Competition, Clonter Opera Prize and the Gösta Winbergh Award both in 2003 and 2004. In the season 2003/2004 Jonas Durán was appointed “soloist of the year” by The Swedish Wind Symphony Orchestra.

In 2005/2006, Jonas sang Zinovy Borisovich Ismailov in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Dmitri Shostakovich at the Värmland Opera in Sweden, where he later the same season sang Don Ottavio (opposite Håkan Hagegård as Don Giovanni). The 2006/2007 season included Ferrando in Peter Konwitchsny’s Cosi fan Tutte at the Värmland Opera, Jonas’ first major Verdi role Macduff in Macbeth at the Malmö Opera and Pirelli in Sweeney Todd in Karlstad.

This past season Jonas has sung Rodolfo in Konwitschny’s production of La Bohème and performed in Henry Bronett’s Cirkus Opera. This summer he sings Monostatos in The Magic Flute at Teater Hedeland. Among future engagements we find The Duke in Rigoletto and Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana for Värmlandsoperan and Jonas’ debut at The Royal Swedish Opera singing Macduff in Macbeth in spring 2010.
