Mats Rondin /Cello
Mats Rondin is widely recognized as one of Scandinavia’s leading musical profiles, equally successful as a soloist and chamber musician, but also, in later years, as a conductor. He was born in 1960 and his prodigious musical talent was apparent from a very early age. He studied with some of the best teachers in the world, including William Pleeth, Ralph Kirshbaum and Mstislav Rostropovich and made his debut as soloist while still in his teens. He quickly established himself as one of the leading cellists of his generation with an impressively wide and varied repertoire.
Mats Rondin has performed with all Scandinavian orchestras as well as with orchestras in France, Germany and many countries in Eastern Europe. He is a noted chamber musician, and as such he has performed in Germany, Belgium, Poland, Finland, Holland (Concertgebouw) and Italy. In 2001 he was, together with such renowned cellists as Gutman, Maisky and Rostropovich, invited to the Riga Cello Festival, where he performed Gösta Nystroem’s Sinfonia Concertante.
In the last few years Mats Rondin has emerged as a prominent conductor. He has conducted all the symphony orchestras and major chamber orchestras in Sweden and is the founder of the very successful ”Huaröd (a.k.a. Isidor) Chamber Orchestra” consisting of the elite of young Scandinavian string musicians. In Scandinavia he has conducted the Copenhagen Philharmonic orchestra, The Danish radio Sinfonietta, Odense Symphony, Aalborg Symphony, Aarhus Symphony as well as the Copenhagen Royal Opera Orchestra in Denmark and in Norway he has conducted the Norwegian Radio Orchestra as well as the symphony orchestras of Trondheim, Kristiansand and Tromsö.
He is, of course, continuing to perform as a cellist with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, and with various chamber orchestras. He often successfully combines the role of conductor and soloist in his performances of works like Haydn’s Cello concertos and Aulis Sallinens “The Nocturnal Dances of Don Juanquixote” a.o.
Recent and future engagements include concerts with the symphony orchestras in Helsingborg, Norrköping, Malmö and Jönköping as well as with the Stockholm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He is also a returning guest in the Västerås Chamber Orchestra, Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, Musica Vitae, SNYKO (Stockholm Chamber Orchestra), Stuttgart Kammerorchester and in January 2008 he made his very successful first appearance as soloist and conductor with the Bochumer Symphoniker in Germany.
Mats Rondin counts among the most prominent cello-techers, and is currently professor of cello at the Malmö University College of Music. Mats Rondin features on many recordings, both as a cellist and conductor. He can be heard on Swedish Society, Caprice, BIS, Naxos and Vanguard Classics. His most recent recordings are Haydn’s Cello Concerto C major and Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht with Isidor (former Huaröd) Chamber Orchestra with Mats Rondin as conductor and soloist. With pianist Hans Pålsson he has recorded Beethoven and Brahms cello sonatas on Isidor Records. Mr Rondin’s instrument is a 1772 Ferdinando Gagliano. |
