Born 1964 in Boliden, Petter Sundkvist rapidly achieved a leading position on the Swedish musical scene and is today among the most sought after of Swedish conductors.
Petter Sundkvist has created for himself a broad and eclectic range of repertoire and styles. He has conducted more than 20 productions at the Swedish opera houses. He has also devoted himself to contemporary music and made over 60 first performances of Nordic composers.
Besides having conducted all Swedish orchestras and orchestras in the Nordic countries, Germany, Holland, Great Britain, Italy, Russia and Slovakia, Petter Sundkvist has for many years had leading positions in the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra and Musica Vitae.. In 1996-98 Petter Sundkvist was Associate Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Today Petter Sundkvist is Chief Conductor of the Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra and Artistic Director of the NEO Ensemble and Piteå Chamber Opera, with whom he has premiered several groundbreaking new operas by Swedish composers.
With the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Petter Sundkvist took part in an extensive recording project of music by Swedish composers on Naxos. Especially the Stenhammar recording with Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the four CDs with music by J M Kraus with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra have been much acclaimed in international press. The first Kraus CD received Cannes Classical Award 1999.
Petter Sundkvist is also represented on the labels BIS, daCapo, Daphne and Phono Suecia.
From 2003 Petter Sundkvist is professor at the Luleå University of Technology-School of Music in Piteå.
